Daniel Tad “Bobby” Lane, 79, of Cuero, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, surrounded by his family. Bobby entered this world on July 28, 1947, and departed it on his 79th birthday.
Born in Cuero to Harold N. “Fritz” Lane and Marion Ruth Eichenlaub Lane, Bobby was proud to call DeWitt County home throughout his life. He faithfully served his country in the United States Navy as a Radarman from 1967 to 1971, carrying the values of service, integrity, and dedication with him throughout his life.
On December 4, 1971, Bobby married the love of his life, Fern Palmer, in Cuero. Together they built a remarkable 54-year marriage rooted in family and unwavering devotion. As the owner of Lane Insurance and a licensed insurance agent, Bobby spent decades serving the people of his area, earning not only their business but also their trust and friendship.
Bobby believed in giving back to the place that had given so much to him. He proudly served on the Cuero City Council and as Mayor Pro Tem. He was an active member of the Rotary Club, serving as Club President in 1991 and 1992. One of his greatest passions was helping establish the Annual DeWitt County Pescadores Fishing Tournament, a tradition that recently celebrated its 28th year and continues to benefit those it serves. He was a founding member of the tournament.
An outdoorsman through and through, Bobby was happiest on the water in Rockport, in a deer blind, on the golf course, or cooking for family and friends. Those who knew Bobby also knew that whenever he planned a fishing trip, the wind never seemed far behind. That running joke earned him the nickname “Hurricane Bob,” and he embraced it with his trademark smile. As friends often said, “If the wind ain’t blowing, Bob ain’t going.”
More than any title or accomplishment, Bobby treasured being a husband, father, and grandfather. His greatest joy came from spending time with his family, celebrating milestones, sharing stories, offering guidance, and creating memories that will be cherished for generations.
Bobby is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Fern; his daughters, Jennifer Lane Sturm (Andrew), Melissa Lane Caskey (Robert), Amanda Lane Hedtke (Wade), and Lacy Lane; his sisters, Tinker Cox, Barbara Glodt (Robert), and Cynthia Felknor; and his cherished grandchildren, Meagan Sturm, Maggie Sturm, Moriah Sturm, Mary Ellen Sturm, Riley Caskey, Caden Caskey, Selah Hedtke, and Silas Hedtke.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold N. “Fritz” Lane and Marion Ruth Eichenlaub Lane.
Visitation will be held Saturday, August 1, 2026, 10:00 a.m. at Grace Episcopal Church. Funeral services will begin at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Peter Thaddeus officiating.
A life measured not by the years he lived, but by the lives he touched, Bobby leaves behind a legacy of service, generosity, laughter, and unwavering love for his family. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
