Cuero, Tx -Cuero Turkeyfest Association is preparing for a spirited midsummer gathering as Ruby Begonia Selection Day returns to Downtown Cuero on Saturday, July 25, offering residents an early taste of the tradition that has long defined the community’s fall festivities.
The annual event determines which turkey will be named Ruby Begonia, the bird that will represent Cuero in the famed Turkeyfest races later this year. Crowds are expected to fill the downtown area as the evening unfolds with live music, food vendors, local artisans, and the unmistakable excitement of turkey racing.
Festivities begin at 6 p.m., with Stephanie & the Southern Drive Band taking the stage at 7 p.m. Food trucks and drink vendors will be available throughout the evening, providing a variety of options for families and visitors. In partnership with Downtown Cuero Main Street, an Artisan Market will be hosted under the library pavilion, showcasing handmade goods and local craftsmanship.
The highlight of the night arrives at 7:30 p.m., when turkey racing officially begins and spectators gather to see which bird will earn the title of Ruby Begonia. The selection marks a key moment in Cuero’s turkey‑racing tradition and signals the community’s countdown to Turkeyfest.
The event is free and open to the public. Residents and visitors are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and enjoy an evening that blends community pride, local culture, and one of Cuero’s most unique traditions.
