FBI INFORMANT SENTENCED TO SIX YEARS FOR LYING TO CONGRESS ABOUT PRESIDENT BIDEN AND HIS SON ACCEPTING BRIBES

Alexander Smirnov, a former FBI informant, was sentenced to six years in prison on Wednesday for fabricating claims about President Biden and his son, Hunter Biden, accepting bribes. Smirnov, a dual U.S.-Israeli citizen, pleaded guilty in mid-December to four counts of falsifying statements, which played a role in a Republican congressional investigation into the Biden family. Additionally, he pleaded guilty to unrelated tax evasion charges for concealing millions in income.

Smirnov falsely claimed that the head of Burisma, a Ukrainian energy company, paid both Bidens $5 million. This false information was significant in the House GOP’s investigation into the Biden family. He admitted to providing “false derogatory information” about President Biden and Hunter Biden.

Smirnov will receive credit for the time he has already spent in prison since his arrest in February 2024 on charges of making false statements. The Justice Department stated that the events Smirnov reported to the FBI in June 2020 were fabrications.

In late November 2024, Smirnov was indicted on tax fraud charges, including two counts of tax evasion and eight counts related to making false statements on tax returns. Special counsel David Weiss, who also prosecuted Hunter Biden on tax and gun charges, brought the case against Smirnov.

The court recommended that Smirnov be considered for the Bureau of Prisons Residential Drug Abuse Program, according to court records.
