EARLY‑MORNING EXPLOSION SHAKES MOULTON; FIRE CONTAINED BUT STILL BURNING

By Pat Trevino – 10/18/2026

MOULTON, Texas — A powerful explosion jolted residents awake early Saturday morning, shaking homes across the Moulton area and sending emergency crews to a tank site along FM 1680.

The blast occurred at approximately 12:50 a.m. Saturday, when one or more storage tanks located just outside the Moulton city limits exploded. The force of the blast was felt throughout town, with residents reporting windows rattling and homes briefly shaking.

According to early community reports, Moulton Police Chief Daniel Beyer, Officer Larry McDougal, Lavaca County Sheriff’s Office deputies, and members of the Moulton Volunteer Fire Department were among the agencies noted as being involved following the explosion. When firefighters reached the site, the tanks were already engulfed in flames.

Fire crews were able to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to nearby structures or additional tanks. However, the tanks themselves continued to burn throughout the day, which is typical in industrial tank fires where the safest approach is to control the perimeter and allow the remaining product to burn off under supervision.

As of the latest information available, no injuries have been reported. Officials have not yet released details about what type of material was stored in the tanks or what may have caused the explosion. State regulatory agencies are expected to begin their review once the site is fully secured.

Residents described the blast as unusually intense. “It was so loud my whole house shook,” said Mary Ann Billimek Henry. “I thought the windows were going to break.”

Firefighters are expected to remain on scene until the burn‑off is complete and the area is declared safe. Additional information will be released as the investigation continues.
