Summers (Odell) Johnson III, 77, of Schroeder, passed away Thursday, July 17, 2025, at home surrounded by his family.
Odell was born August 12, 1947, in Yoakum, Texas, to Summers Odell Jr. and Ethel, and was the oldest of four brothers. He served in the United States Navy during Vietnam. After leaving the service, he worked in the oilfield until 1985, when he became self-employed and pursued his passion for working with his hands and being outdoors.
He married Sandra on May 22, 1998. Together, they built the home they shared, launched a rental business, and tackled countless hands-on jobs over the years — from roofing and plumbing to log splitting and shredding. They enjoyed many trips to their favorite getaway in Las Vegas, yet some of their most cherished moments were spent right on their front porch, sipping coffee and simply enjoying each other’s company
Odell was a storyteller. People and animals alike were drawn to him. He loved being outdoors and spent the majority of his time working his land and garden alongside his wife.
Odell is survived by his wife of 27 years Sandra Saunders Johnson, children; Michael (Pam) Johnson, Tacara (Fred) Whisenhunt, and Robert Fagan. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Walker Johnson, Heather and Halie Woods, Holly and Ayden Harris, Lillian and Elijah Fagan, brothers; David (Janice) Johnson, and Ronnie (Linda) Johnson.
He is preceded in death by his parents and brother Gary Johnson.
A celebration of Odell’s life will be held 3 to 5 pm Sunday, August 10, 2025 at Aunt Di’s Kountry Kitchen 606 E. Main St. Yorktown, Texas.
