DEWITT COUNTY, Texas — An inmate at the DeWitt County Jail died Monday morning after being found unresponsive during routine jail operations, according to a statement released by the DeWitt County Sheriff’s Office.
Officials reported that at approximately 10:47 a.m. on July 13, 2026, jail staff discovered the inmate in an unresponsive state. Personnel immediately initiated life‑saving measures while awaiting emergency medical responders. Despite those efforts, the inmate was pronounced deceased.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the inmate had been held on charges of Murder and Tampering with or Fabricating Physical Evidence with Intent to Impair. No identifying information has been released.
Per standard procedure in Texas, the Texas Department of Public Safety Texas Rangers have taken over as the lead investigative agency. The Sheriff’s Office stated it is fully cooperating with the Rangers throughout the investigation.
Authorities say that no evidence of foul play has been found at this stage, though the case remains active. Final determinations will depend on the medical examiner’s findings and the completion of the Rangers’ investigation.
Despite the Sheriff’s Office indicating that no further information will be released at this time, Cuero Online News will continue pressing for transparency from DPS, the Texas Rangers, and county officials as the investigation develops.
