YOAKUM: Fernando Mata, 73, of Yoakum, Texas, passed away peacefully on July 21, 2025. He was born on October 13, 1951 in Petersburg, TX, to Pablo and Santos (Segura) Mata. Fernando was a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend whose warmth, work ethic, and sense of humor left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.
Fernando retired after many dedicated years of service at Brannan Paving Company in Victoria, Texas. Known for his steady hands and strong work ethic, he took pride in his job and the relationships he built along the way. Fernando loved spending time with his family and will be remembered for his big heart, quiet strength, and the joy he found in being surrounded by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his devoted daughter Erica and her husband Chris Romero Jr.; grandchildren Alliysah Romero (Marcello), Samantha Contreras (Carlos), Alton Dilworth (Samantha), and Christopher Romero III; great-grandchildren Gracelyn, Paris, DK, baby Dilworth, and baby Contreras. Fernando also leaves behind his sister Betty Reyes, nephew Jason Reyes (Lucy), great-nephew Jason Reyes (Amy), and brother Bobby Wade.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Pablo and Santos Mata; his brother Carlos Mata; and his nephew Zachary Rosales.
Visitation 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., with Funeral Service at 5:00 p.m., Wednesday, July 23, 2025 at Thiele-Cooper Funeral Home, with Roxy Elizondo officiating. Burial to be held at a later date.
