Stevenson Unit Welcomes New Officers Following TDCJ Academy Graduation

Pat Trevino | March 24, 2025
CUERO, Texas — The Stevenson Unit is proud to welcome two new correctional officers to its ranks following their successful completion of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) Pre‑Service Training Academy. Officer Cates and Officer Kurkov have officially graduated from the intensive eight‑week program, marking a major milestone in their careers and demonstrating the discipline and commitment required for service in the correctional system.

The Pre‑Service Academy provides rigorous instruction in security procedures, ethics, communication, defensive tactics, and the daily responsibilities of correctional officers. Graduates must show strong judgment, professionalism, and the ability to perform under pressure—qualities both officers displayed throughout their training.

Unit leadership expressed pride in the newest additions to the team, noting that their hard work has prepared them for the challenges and rewards of working within the TDCJ.

“We are incredibly proud of Officer Cates and Officer Kurkov,” officials said. “Their dedication over the past eight weeks reflects the high standards expected of our staff, and we are confident they will serve the Stevenson Unit with integrity and professionalism.”

As they begin their careers, both officers join a team committed to maintaining safety, security, and respect within the facility. The Stevenson Unit extends a warm welcome and wishes them continued success as they step into their new roles.
