Brunk Auctions a private auction house specializing in the sale of fine art, jewelry, antique furniture, and coins ranging from contemporary art to antiquities recently sold a rare privately held copy of the US Constitution for 9 million dollars.
The 237-year-old artifact is one of 100 official copies printed in 1787 and among the eight known to exist today that were sent to state leaders for review before formal adoption. Of these eight, seven are held by public institutions.
In 2022, this copy of the Constitution was found inside a metal filing cabinet in a neglected room on a property once owned by North Carolina’s first governor, Samuel Johnston, in Edenton, North Carolina. Johnston, who served as governor from 1787 to 1789, presided over the state convention that ratified the Constitution, which preserved this document. Attached to the document was a letter from George Washington, advocating for ratification.
Billionaire investor Kenneth Griffin acquired the last of the 14 known existing copies for $43.2 million in 2021.
