The Healthy Texas Youth Ambassador Program, a statewide leadership initiative supported by Texas A&M AgriLife Extension and closely connected to the 4‑H youth development network, recently featured Andrew Hahn, a graduating senior from DeWitt County whose academic and personal growth reflect a strong commitment to learning, service, and leadership.

Hahn plans to pursue a degree in Horticultural Science at Texas A&M University, building on years of hands‑on experiences that have shaped both his education and his worldview. From summer road trips across the United States to international travel in Ecuador, Hahn gained exposure to diverse cultures and communities. These experiences broadened his global perspective while strengthening his communication skills and his ability to build meaningful connections with others.

Hahn describes health as a balance of physical strength and mental well‑being, emphasizing the importance of feeling grounded both in body and mind. Among his many experiences, his time in Ecuador remains especially significant — not only for the places he visited, but for the people who made the journey unforgettable.

Reflecting on his time as an ambassador, Hahn shared: “I have gained valuable real-life knowledge and meaningful experiences through my role as a Healthy Texas Youth Ambassador.”

As he prepares to graduate and begin his studies at Texas A&M, Hahn carries with him the lessons, relationships, and confidence built through the program. His story highlights the impact of youth leadership initiatives supported by AgriLife Extension and the 4‑H community.

Ribbon Cutting Celebrates Major Improvements to Guadalupe Paddling Trails

By Pat Treviño, May 1, 2026

The Cuero Chamber of Commerce hosted a ribbon cutting this week to celebrate significant upgrades to the Guadalupe paddling trails and river access points, marking a major step forward for outdoor recreation and nature tourism in the region.

The improvements, completed along FM 766, FM 72, and FM 236, were made possible through the efforts of County Commissioner Pct. 1 Ryan Varela and his crew, who worked to clean, clear, and enhance access along key points of the river. Community leaders say the upgrades will make the Guadalupe more accessible for paddlers, families, and visitors seeking to explore the natural beauty surrounding Cuero.

Newly installed Texas Parks & Wildlife maps and kiosks sponsored by the Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority (GBRA) now provide clearer navigation and information for those using the trails. The additions are expected to improve safety, orientation, and overall visitor experience.

Several local officials attended the ceremony, including Pct. 1 Commissioner Ryan Varela, Pct. 4 Commissioner Carson, Anna Daniels of GBRA, and Shelly Plante of Texas Parks & Wildlife, underscoring the collaborative nature of the project.

Guests also enjoyed agua fresca from La Flor de Guanajuato, sponsored by GBRA and the Cuero Development Corporation — a refreshing treat after a morning spent along the riverbank.

Community members noted that while the improvements are welcome, additional work remains. Concerns were raised about the condition of boat ramps at several bridges, where deep ruts in the gravel make launching difficult. Chamber representatives responded that, to their understanding, those areas are also scheduled for attention.

Paddling continues to grow as a key part of Cuero’s nature‑based tourism economy. By keeping river access clean, safe, and well‑maintained, local leaders hope to encourage more residents and visitors to unplug, explore, and enjoy the region’s outdoor assets.

With the latest upgrades now complete, Cuero looks forward to more adventures on the Guadalupe — and to continued investment in the natural spaces that make the community shine.

Board Member Joins Cuero High School for Mental Health Awareness Month Kickoff

By Pat Treviño | May 1, 2026

Board member Maddy Schroller Langford of Friends of DeWitt County Children took part in the Mental Health Awareness Month kickoff event held earlier this week at Cuero High School, where students, staff, and community partners gathered for a morning focused on education, support, and visibility.

The event centered on walking the track, sharing mental‑health resources, and encouraging open conversations about emotional well‑being. Participants emphasized the importance of recognizing signs of struggle, reducing stigma, and ensuring that students know help is available.

Organizers noted that having leadership present reinforces the message that mental health is a community priority, not just a school initiative. The kickoff marks the beginning of a month‑long effort to highlight awareness, prevention, and access to support services for young people and families in Cuero.

As Mental Health Awareness Month continues, local organizations and schools plan to host additional activities aimed at promoting resilience, connection, and early intervention.

Yoakum Hospital Honors Auxiliary Volunteers During National Volunteer Month

By Pat Treviño, Cuero Online News

“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” Winston Churchill’s words rang especially true this April as Yoakum Community Hospital celebrated National Volunteer Month and recognized the dedicated members of its long‑standing Auxiliary Club.

Founded in 1933, the Auxiliary has been a pillar of service for more than nine decades, supporting patients, families, and hospital staff through countless hours of volunteer work. Today, the group’s well‑known Pink Ladies continue that legacy, operating the hospital gift shop and offering encouragement, kindness, and comfort to everyone who walks through the doors.
