Yoakum High School Student Council Announces 2026–27 Homecoming Court Nominees

The Yoakum High School Student Council has unveiled the 2026–27 Homecoming Court nominees, highlighting a group of students whose spirit, creativity, and involvement help shape both the campus and the wider community. Known for bringing together student leadership and fresh ideas, the Council continues its tradition of celebrating those who exemplify Bulldog pride.

Winners for each title will be announced Friday, September 11 at 6:30 PM, adding excitement to this year’s Homecoming festivities.

CNA Graduates Honored for Compassionate Service at Local Ceremony

Yorktown Nursing and Rehabilitation Center honored a group of newly certified nursing assistants this week as they celebrated the completion of their training program. Surrounded by instructors, supporters, and family members, the graduates participated in a heartfelt ceremony that highlighted not only their academic achievement but also the compassion and dedication they bring to the healthcare field.

Wearing bright yellow gowns and proudly holding their certificates, graduates stood among classmates and mentors as they were recognized for their hard work. The ceremony took place inside a community training space, where instructors and staff joined the group for photos and congratulations.

The message shared with the graduates emphasized the deeper meaning of their accomplishment: “Today, we celebrate more than your graduation—we celebrate the hearts behind the uniforms. As you begin your journey as Certified Nursing Assistants, remember that every gentle touch, every listening ear, and every act of kindness can make a difference in someone’s life. Your knowledge may earn you your certificate, but your compassion will make you extraordinary caregivers.”

Program leaders echoed this sentiment, noting that CNAs often serve as the frontline of patient care, providing comfort, dignity, and human connection in moments when it matters most. The graduates were encouraged to carry their purpose forward as they begin their careers in hospitals, long‑term care facilities, and home‑health settings.

The ceremony concluded with applause, photos, and warm words of encouragement for the new CNAs as they step into roles that rely not only on skill, but on empathy and heart.

Cuero Marching Band Launches Deer Corn Raffle to Support New Uniforms

With hunting season approaching, the Cuero Marching Band has kicked off a community fundraiser that blends local tradition with student support. The organization is raffling off a pallet of deer corn, offering residents a chance to stock up for the season while helping the band raise money for much‑needed new uniforms.

Only 200 tickets will be sold, priced at $20 each, making this a limited‑entry raffle that supporters expect will move quickly. Band parents and volunteers are currently working to secure a public location where tickets can be purchased, and an announcement will be made once details are finalized.

In the meantime, community members who wish to participate are encouraged to message the organizers directly. Arrangements will be made to meet with anyone wanting to buy a ticket.

The band program continues to rely on local support to fund major expenses, and new uniforms remain one of the organization’s top priorities. Fundraisers like this raffle play a vital role in ensuring students have the equipment and attire they need to represent Cuero with pride throughout the marching season.

Residents are invited to take part, spread the word, and help the Cuero Marching Band reach its goal.

James “Jimmy” Meinhart -Jul 25, 1954 to Aug 17, 2026 (72)

We sadly announce the passing of James “Jimmy” Meinhart, who peacefully left us on August 17, 2026, at the age of 72. The son of the late Richard and Patricia Meinhart, he was born on July 25, 1954, in Massillon, and lived the last three years in Cuero, TX near his two sons and grandsons.

After graduating from Massillon Washington High School in 1972, Jimmy proudly served four years in the U.S. Navy as an Atlantic Fleet Band percussionist. He was dispatched internationally, sometimes with only hours’ notice, for ceremonial affairs. He went on to build a successful career as a precision machinist, working many years at Stark Mold & Pattern. Jimmy’s passion for music followed him throughout his life as he faithfully performed as the drummer for Trinity Gospel Temple for over 40 years. His dedication to music and his love of aviation were passed down from his father to his children. Jimmy’s greatest joy in life was the time he shared with his family and friends. Loved by all, Jimmy was the quiet man in the room who had it all figured out.

Jimmy will be forever remembered by his sons Louie Meinhart (Alexis) and Danny Meinhart (Kyla); daughters Betsy and Emily; grandchildren Ava, Eve, Jordan, Ellison, Allison, and Parker; sisters Linda (Joe) McKim and Julie (Bill) Dewald; brother John Meinhart. Also cherishing his memory are his aunts Mary Lou Stenger and Susan Williams; his uncle Dennis Dillon; niece Lisa (Craig) Young; nephews Dillon Dewald, Steven (Mandy) Jenkins and Thomas (Sarah) Jenkins; Mary Ellen Adkins, the mother of his children and a close friend throughout his life; lifelong friends John P. Adkins and Timothy Isaacs; and many extended family members and friends.

Funeral services will be held at Divine Mercy Parish, St. Joseph Church in Massillon, with a Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, at 10:00 a.m., followed by the committal at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman, Ohio, with Military Honors.

His family appreciates the thoughts, prayers, and support of those who knew him.

YOAKUM: Frances M. Garza, age 86, passed away August 22, 2026. She was born December 26, 1939, in Hallettsville, to Pedro and Pauline Hernandez De La Rosa. She was a homemaker, cleaned houses and was a babysitter. She enjoyed spending time with her family, playing games, being outside and putting together puzzles.

Survivors: daughter, Monica Partida; sons, Jesse Garza (Janie Ann), Jack R. Garza, Richard V. Garza and Concepcion Garza Jr. (Sabrina); 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; sisters, Natividad Neubauer (William) and Cecilia Banda; brothers, Tony De La Rosa (Margaret) and Henry De La Rosa.

Preceded in death by: parents; husband, Concepcion Garza; sisters, Santos De La Rosa, Simona Girtman and Mary De La Rosa; brothers, Lupe De La Rosa, Martin De La Rosa, Chapo De La Rosa, Coop De La Rosa and Masimo De La Rosa.

A Rosary was recited, followed by a Funeral Mass at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with Rev. Matthew Huehlefeld officiating. Interment took place at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.

Pallbearers: Christina Garza, Curtis Smith, Jeremiah Smith, Jathan Vasquez, Martin Partida and Diego Garza.

Memorial contributions may be given to St. Joseph Catholic Church or donor’s choice.

Nina Lee (Kutzer) Bunch – April 1935 to August 21, 2026 (91)

MAGNOLIA: Nina Lee (Kutzer) Bunch, of Magnolia, TX, entered heaven’s gates on Friday, August 21, 2026. Nina was born in Bandera, TX, in April 1935, to Rex James Kutzer and Ida Mae Kutzer. Nina left Bandera and moved to Arkansas with her family, where she met Billy Joe Bunch, Sr.  Billy and Nina had three children (Pat, Joe & Anita). Billy and Nina moved back to Texas. They made a home with their children in Pearland, where they lived for 33 years.

After retiring, Billy and Nina moved to their farm in Yoakum, where they lived for 17 years. Nina loved growing flowers, tending a vegetable garden, and watching her favorite birds, cardinals and hummingbirds. 

Following Billy’s passing, Nina moved to Magnolia, TX, where she lived for eleven years with her daughter, Pat.  Nina was a devoted Christ follower, daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. She will be missed by everyone.

She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, husband, son (Billy Joe Bunch, Jr.) and many other loved ones.

Nina is survived by her two daughters, Nina Patricia (Larry) and Anita Dale (Bruce); 7 grandsons; 4 great granddaughters; 8 great grandsons, and many beloved nieces, nephews, neighbors and friends.

Serving as pall bearers will be Nina’s seven grandsons: Jeff Jeffrey, Jason Bunch, Jess Jeffrey, Paul Eckert III, Jacob Bunch, Travis Eckert, and Jordon Bunch.

A Service was held August 29, 2026.  Nina is buried at Hebron Cemetery in Yoakum, with Pastor Elvis Whaley officiating.

Cuero Hosts One of the Region’s Most Competitive Early‑Season XC Meets

Cuero, Tx – The Cuero Gobbler Invitational brought a full slate of runners to Cuero Municipal Park this weekend, as teams from across the region competed in warm, late‑August conditions that tested both endurance and early‑season readiness. The meet, hosted by Cuero High School, marked one of the first major cross‑country events of the fall and drew strong participation across varsity and junior varsity divisions.

Athletes and spectators filled the park throughout the morning, with coaches noting the competitive energy and the importance of early‑season meets for building momentum. Cuero’s staff and volunteers kept the event running smoothly, earning praise from visiting programs for the well‑organized course layout and efficient race management.

While full results continue to be posted and updated on MileSplit, the Invitational showcased a wide range of emerging talent and provided runners with valuable experience ahead of district competition. SHINER: Lucille “Sister” Lawrence, age 87, was born on November 29, 1938 in Dryer, Texas to the late Jessie and Della Spruell. She peacefully departed life on August 20, 2026 in Seguin, Texas.

Lucille was a member of St. James Missionary Baptist Church. She worked as a caregiver for many years, touching lives through her hard work, care and kindness. Lucille lived in constant motion–always on the go and embracing the moment. She was known for making people laugh and her outgoing spirit. She enjoyed listening to music, watching western shows and most importantly spending time with family and friends.

She leaves to cherish and honor her memory: daughter, Helen McAfee (Todd); grandchildren, Jessica Lawrence (Darrell), Charles Gabriel McAfee and Jeremiah McAfee (Taylor) and nine great-grandchildren; nephew, Anton Dews (Kristen) along with nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by: parents; husband, Lavel “Dr. Duck” Lawrence and a brother, Jessie Spruell Jr.

Funeral Service 2:30 p.m. Saturday, September 5, 2026, at Thiele-Cooper Funeral Home with Pastor Lynn Jones officiating. Burial at Bluebonnet Cemetery.

Pallbearers: Bradyn Davis, Jeremiah McAfee, Charles Gabriel McAfee, Austonio Justice, Dontell Bell, Truman Justice and Mitchell Justice. Honorary pallbearers: Terry Spruell, Anton Dews, Alvin Brown and Archie Lawrence.

Join the Mini Trotter Camp — Future Gobbler Trotters Welcome!

The Gobbler Trotters are inviting all young dancers — Pre‑K through 6th grade — to join this year’s Mini Trotter Camp, a high‑energy morning designed to introduce little girls to the spirit, teamwork, and excitement of Cuero’s beloved dance team.

The camp will be held on Saturday, October 3rd, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in the CHS Gym. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., and walk‑ins are welcome, making it easy for families to participate. The cost is $40 per child, payable by link, cash, or check.

Every Mini Trotter will receive a camp T‑shirt and fun goodies, and families are encouraged to register by September 17th to guarantee their shirt is ready on camp day.

Mini Trotters will learn basic dance skills, practice a special routine, and spend time with the Gobbler Trotters who will guide them through the morning’s activities. It’s a perfect chance for young girls to experience the joy of dance, build confidence, and feel like part of the team.

And the best part — Mini Trotters will perform at the October 23rd home game, giving them a moment to shine under the Friday night lights.

Parents should fill out one registration form per child.  The Mini Trotter Camp is a fun, welcoming way for Cuero’s youngest dancers to step into Gobbler spirit and join the tradition.
