El Zorro’s Corner: Unleashing the Truth About Dogs in Restaurants

(Cuero Online News Introduces New Columnist – The Voice of Cuero,Texas)

By El Zorro

Dear El Zorro,

The other day I was at a local restaurant, and I almost threw up my food.     I was having a perfectly good time.  There I was with my husband enjoying my margarita and the tasty street tacos when this lady walks in with her dog!

Yuck! And before you think I don’t like dogs let me just say that I love dogs.  Well, most dogs….my dog! Not other people’s untrained dog.God forbid! I say anything about Dogs nowadays.  Any negative talk about dogs is likely to get me reported to PETA.  But I will say this, dogs do not belong in a restaurant! There! I said it! Anyway, isn’t there some health department issue on this?

I can understand if it’s a service dog for someone with a disability, and I’m cool with that but I don’t think this was the case. Service dogs are usually well trained but not this dog. This lady had him on her lap and she was struggling to keep him still.  Then it jumps off her lap and kept circling around until it finds this one spot underneath the table.  I swear it looked like it was about to do its business right then and there.  And I kept looking around for someone to say something and what’s worse is that I seemed to be the only person who was bothered by this.

At the risk of sounding like a Karen I said nothing, but I was fuming!  I asked the waiter to make my food to go and I hurried out of there.

Help me Zorro, what are the laws about dogs in restaurants?

Dear Curious Canine Conundrum,

Ah, the age-old dilemma of dining with our four-legged friends! It’s a topic that stirs more controversy than a spicy salsa at a Tex-Mex joint. Fear not, my fellow foodie, for El Zorro is here to untangle the leash of confusion and sniff out the facts.

The Doggy Dilemma

Our reader, vexed by a non-service dog’s presence at a restaurant, grapples with the eternal question: “To bark or not to bark?” She wisely refrained from unleashing her inner Karen (a term that now rivals “avocado toast” in millennial lingo). But what say the laws of the Lone Star State?

Texas Tidbits

  1. No Paws on Plates: Texas law, like a vigilant watchdog, prohibits live animals (yes, even those adorable furballs) in restaurants where food could potentially be contaminated. Kibbles and bits have no place near our enchiladas.
  2. Exceptions Galore: But wait! Exceptions abound. Service dogs, those noble companions trained to assist individuals with disabilities, get a golden ticket. They’re welcome to dine alongside us mere mortals. And let’s not forget our trusty police pups—they’re in the clear too.
  3. Local Flavor: Here’s where it gets interesting. Counties and cities can tweak the rules. In Dallas, restaurants can apply for an exception to allow dogs in outdoor patio areas (as long as food isn’t whipped up there). In Austin, any eatery can host alfresco doggy diners, provided the pup doesn’t barge through the kitchen doors.

The Tail End

So, dear reader, if Fido’s not sporting a service vest, you’re not barking up the wrong tree. But remember, discretion is key. No one wants to be the howling hound in a crowded eatery. And if all else fails, just give your neighbor’s schnauzer a knowing nod—it’s the universal language of “We’re in this together.”

Until next time, keep your paws clean and your salsa spicy!

Barkingly yours,

El Zorro

Texas State released from contract to host debate, as Biden and Trump sidestep tradition

2024 TEXAS ELECTIONS

Texas State was slated to be the first Texas university to host a presidential debate before the leading candidates sidestepped the traditional debate schedule.

JUNE 24, 20245 PM CENTRAL

Any lingering hope that Texas would host a presidential debate this cycle was dashed Monday after the Commission on Presidential Debates released Texas State University from its contract.

The San Marcos campus was expected to host the first debate of the 2024 general election on Sept. 16 until President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump sidestepped the commission, which has historically organized the forums, and brokered their own.

Biden and Trump are expected to debate for the first time Thursday. It will be hosted by CNN in Atlanta.

Lafayette College, Virginia State University and the University of Utah, Salt Lake City were also selected by the commission to host debates in the fall. Like Texas State, they were released from their contracts on Monday.

“It is unfair to ask the four campuses to continue to prepare for their debates, as they have been doing since their November 2023 selection,” commission co-chairs Antonia Hernández and Frank Fahrenkopf said in a statement. “We are grateful to the sites, and we are sorry to come to this decision. We are dismayed that students of the four campuses will not have the opportunity to participate in these historic voter education forums.”

Texas State would have been the first Texas university to host a presidential debate. Officials were expecting to spend about $5 million to host its debate and had appointed Jack Martin, a former chair of the Texas State University System’s Board of Regents, to lead fundraising.

The university said on Monday that it had immediately stopped planning and spending related to the debate when Biden and Trump announced their alternative plans last month.

“We remain steadfast in supporting our students and the entire university community as they continue to learn about democracy, to engage in civil discourse and to participate in the electoral process throughout the upcoming election cycle,” Texas State President Kelly Damphousse said in a statement on Monday, adding that the university had been excited to host the forum as the only Texas university to have graduated a U.S. president and the only Hispanic-Serving Institution selected to host a debate.

While news organizations frequently host debates during the primary, the nonpartisan debate commission was established in 1987 to provide a neutral forum for candidates ahead of the general election.

The commission said in its statement that it would be ready to sponsor debates this election cycle “should circumstances change.”

“The reason for the CPD’s creation remains compelling: a neutral organization with no other role during the general election is well-positioned to offer formats that focus on the candidate and the issues that are most important to the American people,” Hernández and Fahrenkopf said.

In a letter to the commission last month, the Biden campaign said that the commission’s debate format was no longer up to date with contemporary voting trends, with debates scheduled to take place after early voting in many states has already begun. The campaign also said the commission failed to enforce its own rules during the 2020 debates.

Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. failed to qualify for this week’s debate in Georgia after falling short of criterion CNN set out requiring participants to have qualified for ballot spots in states that totaled at least 270 Electoral College votes — the minimum to win the White House.

Trump and Biden are also expected to debate Sept. 10.

Attorney General Ken Paxton Celebrates Sanctity of Life Day on Second Anniversary of the End of Roe v. Wade

June 24, 2024 | Press Release
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and the Office of the Attorney General (“OAG”) observe Sanctity of Life Day to commemorate the second anniversary of the overturning of Roe v. Wade.
On June 24, 2022, the Supreme Court of the United States overturned Roe v. Wade and other similar decisions, returning the legal authority to pass laws concerning abortion back to the states. That same day the OAG closed its offices starting at noon as a memorial to the millions of children killed by abortions during the forty-nine years the Roe decision was allowed to stand. In 2023, the OAG again celebrated Sanctity of Life Day on the first anniversary of the end of Roe v. Wade.
“The legacy wrought by Roe v. Wade and other illegitimate partisan judicial decisions directly led to the deaths of an estimated 70 million children,” said Attorney General Paxton. “Following the overturning of that disastrous legal precedent, I instituted the Sanctity of Life Day within the OAG to serve as a day of remembrance and a celebration of the progress we have made in protecting innocent life.”
“However, the work is far from completed,” added Attorney General Paxton. “The Biden Administration continues to use unlawful agency regulations and other levers of power to force states to institute its radical abortion agenda even when it violates state laws. I will never stop defending the sanctity of life against these unconstitutional attempts to undermine Texas’s life-affirming laws.”

Democrats Hold a Meet ‘n Greet

Cuero, Texas — June 24, 2024

The Gonzales Democratic Party hosted a vibrant Meet ‘n Greet event this past Sunday at the Hochheim Community Center in Cheapside. Despite the sweltering heat, a dedicated group of community members gathered to engage with two promising candidates: Tanya Lloyd and Eric Norman.

Tanya Lloyd: Championing Women’s Reproductive Rights and Education

Tanya Lloyd, a seasoned educator with 17 years of experience, stood before the crowd, her passion evident. She recognized the urgent need to focus on the deterioration of women’s reproductive rights. Attacks on women and on public education are what drove her to leave the Republican party, and eventually to run for Congress.  As a mother, teacher, and advocate, Lloyd vowed to fight for comprehensive healthcare access, including reproductive health services. Her commitment resonated with attendees who understood that reproductive rights are fundamental to women’s autonomy and well-being.

Lloyd’s roots run deep in rural communities, where she has witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by students and educators. Her goal is to represent her district at the national level, advocating for equitable funding for public schools, teacher support, and innovative educational programs. Her vision extends beyond party lines, emphasizing collaboration and practical solutions.

Eric Norman: A Border Town Upbringing and a Call for Fiscal Responsibility

Eric Norman, hailing from the border town of McAllen, brings a unique perspective to the table. Growing up in a region where border issues intersect with daily life, Norman understands the complexities of immigration and security. He firmly believes that securing the border and immigration reform are federal matters. Yet, he questions the nearly $12 billions of state funds allocated to ‘Operation Lone Star’ (OLS).

Norman challenges the narrative that portrays immigrants as criminals. According to the Department of Public Safety (DPS), US nationals account for 86% of OLS arrests for drug offenses and 90% of OLS weapons offenses. Redirecting those substantial funds could have bolstered our public schools, improved infrastructure, and provided healthcare access to millions of Texans.

In Norman’s view, militarizing the border alone won’t address the root causes. To truly address why people, flee their countries, we must tackle climate change and invest in global economic and political stability. His commitment extends beyond party lines, focusing on pragmatic solutions that benefit all Texans.

TikTok Challenges US Ban Law, Citing Freedom of Expression

0

TikTok, the popular short-video app, has taken its fight against the US ban law to court. In a significant legal development, TikTok filed its first legal briefs yesterday, challenging the law that forces a sale or outright ban of the company by its China-based parent company, ByteDance.

Violation of Freedom of Expression

The briefs, supported by eight US-based TikTok creators, argue that the ban law infringes upon Americans’ fundamental right to freedom of expression. TikTok contends that a forced sale would be impractical and result in a two-tier content system, isolating Americans from content produced outside the US.

Behind Closed Doors

TikTok’s legal filings also revealed private negotiations. The company offered US officials a “kill switch” option, allowing swift action if the app posed any national security threat. These negotiations underscore the high stakes involved in the battle over TikTok’s future.

Upcoming Legal Showdown

The Justice Department is expected to respond next month, with oral arguments scheduled for September. As the legal drama unfolds, TikTok’s 170 million monthly active users in the US and over 5 million US-based businesses await the outcome.

Stay tuned for further developments as the courtroom battle intensifies.
