Thanksgiving Spirit in Action: Cuero Joins Statewide Effort to Feed Families

By Trisha Garcia | November 6, 2025

CUERO, TX — As talks of federal SNAP benefits facing disruption this November, Cuero’s community partners are stepping up with compassion and coordination to ensure no family goes hungry during the holiday season. Through a mix of local outreach and statewide support, CAMAL House, the Cuero Municipal Library, and H-E-B’s corporate donation are helping fill the gap for families in need.

Cuero Library Launches Thanksgiving Food Drive

As part of its annual Thanksgiving outreach, the Cuero Municipal Library is proud to announce its fourth annual food drive in support of the vital work of the CAMAL House Food Pantry.

From November 1 through November 26, the library will serve as an official drop-off location for non-perishable food donations. Community members are encouraged to bring items such as canned meats, boxed dinners, vegetables, soups, and snacks to the library’s front desk during regular hours.

CAMAL House Receives Fresh Produce Delivery

On October 27, DeWitt County picked up three truckloads of fresh produce—including apples and potatoes—thanks to the Food Bank of the Golden Crescent. The produce will be distributed through CAMAL House, which continues to serve as a vital lifeline for families facing food insecurity.

“This kind of support makes a real difference,” said a county representative. “Especially now, when families are worried about how they’ll get through the holidays.”

H-E-B Donates $6 Million to Support Texans

In a major statewide effort, H-E-B’s corporate office in San Antonio announced a $6 million donation to help combat food insecurity across Texas. Of that, $5 million is going directly to food banks, including the Food Bank of the Golden Crescent, which serves Cuero and surrounding areas.

This donation comes as the USDA warns of a freeze in federal SNAP funding due to the ongoing government shutdown. H-E-B’s contribution is helping food banks stock up and prepare for increased demand—especially in rural communities like DeWitt County.

“Texas takes care of its own,” said an H-E-B spokesperson. “We’re proud to support families during this critical time.”

How You Can Help

Donate canned goods at the Cuero Library, or
– Volunteer or contribute to CAMAL House at [camalhouse.com](https://camalhouse.com)
– Spread the word to families in need about upcoming distribution days

With Thanksgiving approaching and uncertainty in the air, Cuero’s heart is on full display. Through fresh produce, canned goods, and statewide generosity, the community is proving that no one has to face hunger alone.

Billy Jordan Jr. Completes Training

DeWitt County Emergency Management Coordinator Billy Jordan Jr. received a Certificate of Completion from the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service (TEEX) for successfully completing the NFPA 470 Hazardous Materials Awareness training course.
